About Kurdistan

Our people

The Kurdistan Region has a population of more than 5 million. In these past years the population has gone up to almost 7 million due to violence in Iraq and Syria. The KRG currently shelters millions of refugees.

Worldwide there are roughly 40 million Kurds. In Turkey they make up for about 25% of the population. In Iraq 15%, in Iran 10% and in Syria about 9%. Besides that there are also a large number of Kurds living in the diaspora.

Most Kurds speak at least two different languages fluently. They speak the language of their respective nation of origin and their mother tongue Kurdish. Greater Kurdistan also has dozens of different dialects.

The Kurdistan flag consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and green with a yellow sun with 21 rays at its center. Number 21 is important number in the Yezidi faith. It stands for rebirth.
